Jim Alan Balicanta was arrested in April 2012 for 27 counts of first-degree sexual assault and 25 counts of third-degree sexual assault. According to multiple news reports, the assaults took place over a three-year period before the victim came forward to authorities in January 2012. Balicanta plead no contest to multiple counts and was ultimately charged with eight counts of first degree sexual assault and eight counts of third-degree sexual assault. The victim was an eighth grade student at Iao Intermediate School when the abuse started. In November 2012, Circuit Court Judge Rhondo Loo sentenced Balicanta to a maximum of 20 years in prison. The parole board would establish the minimum time Balicanta must serve.
